Overview

This is a complete, student-facing PowerPoint for NSW HSIE Stage 2 Unit 4. It covers all 16 lessons plus 4 consolidation activities across 419 classroom-ready slides, so you can open it, project it and teach.

The unit follows the great voyages of global navigation and the interactions that connected the Great Southern Land to the world. Students begin with how early maps changed, move through the traditional wayfinding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, the Macassan trade with Arnhem Land and Polynesian navigation of the Pacific, then follow the navigators — Zheng He, Ibn Battuta, Columbus, Magellan, Janszoon, Hartog, Tasman, Cook, Flinders and Bungaree — before comparing the journeys and what each one connected. Throughout, students use maps, journals, artworks and oral histories as sources of evidence to build narratives of the past. Every lesson runs on a clear I Do, We Do, You Do flow with learning intentions, key vocabulary, discussion prompts and challenge tasks.
